MSA Soccer Ball Mastery Program

The Ball Mastery program is designed for the dedicated soccer player who wants to dominate his or her competition. This customized program delivers the highest individual training stimulus and return on investment of time of all MSA programs. Athletes benefit from one, 45 minute session once per week over the course of an 8 week period to improve individual technical ability and mental performance. The addition of mental performance training also gives the athlete a distinct advantage, developing a strong, winning mentality that requires you to take charge of your own mind!

The Ball Mastery program provides the most positive, mistake tolerant training environment. The training sessions go hand in hand with mastering the mental game, regularly reassessing your short and long term goals.

A complete player has to have a fantastic technical base. Individual technical training is the main focus of the Ball Mastery Program.

Experts say that it takes roughly 10,000 hours of practice to achieve mastery in any field. It is said that excellence is not just based on practice, but deliberative practice: ….”acquiring new skills and improving the skills you already have and extending the reach of those skills.” That is why Mastery requires practice, observation, refinement and more practice. The 10,000 hour rule was formulated by Dr. K. Anders Ericsson of Florida University, and made popular by Malcolm Gladwell in his book, “Outliers.” Gladwell made the observation that people who were at the top of their trade had spent at least 10,000 hours learning and mastering their chosen endeavor. Musicians, mathematicians, as well as athletes put all of this work into becoming the Best!

In a 45 minute session, the player can expect to touch the ball a minimum of 1,000 times. Compare that to the average team practice which believe it or not, generates an average of just over 200 ball touches!

The training of balance is also an indispensable part of the training program. Proprioception training boosts the players’ confidence in their own bodies and their bodies capacity to develop in order to cope with the different demands of the game, particularly where the players’ tackling ability is concerned. Proprioception training works on the awareness of movements, the position of the joints and muscle tension.

Program Details:

  • The program is directed by MSA Executive Director and boys Director of Coaching, Jamie Smith.
  • For boys and girls ages 10-18

The athlete will be Assessed during the first session. The “Assessment” is a test that measures an individual player’s overall technical ability. The Assessment covers 7 topic areas that isolate and measure the fundamental skills needed to become a complete technical player. The athlete will again be Assessed during the eighth session. A written Progress Report, providing pre and post Assessment numbers will be provided.
